Father and son qualify for Olympic trials Fruitland and Western Idaho Judo Institute’s Michael Eldred and stepfather Robert Fukuda both qualified for the Judo Olympic trials, which will be held June 13 through 15 at the University of Nevada at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. Eldred is the No. 2 ranked athlete in the male in the 73 kg and under category and will compete June 14 in a competition that will include the top eight male athletes in each category. As the No. 2 athlete, Eldred’s first round match will pit him against the No. 7 ranked athlete, Richard of Cohen, Illinois. Eldred has high hopes as he has defeated all of the athletes from No. 3 to No. 8. Oddly, the last time Eldred competed against the No.1 judoist, Ryan Reser of Colorado, was at the Senior National Championships in 2004. Should things fall into place on June 14, Eldred will have his first encounter with Reser in more than four years in Las Vegas. At stake, the title “Olympian†for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games. Fukuda has been qualified and selected as a member of a team of eight referees to work the Olympic trials. This will be Fukuda’s second selection to work the Olympic trials for judo, his first was in 2004. Both trials will be run simultaneously in the Thomas and Mack Center.
